How roof pitch changes roof area

A pitched roof has more surface area than its horizontal footprint. This calculator uses the geometric pitch factor √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²) to convert the footprint you enter into an estimated sloped area.

How the panel count is estimated

The calculator divides the planning area by one panel’s effective coverage area. Effective coverage is the manufacturer-specified coverage width, not the panel’s nominal width, multiplied by the panel length you enter.

Approximate panels = ceiling((sloped area × (1 + selected allowance)) ÷ ((effective coverage width in inches ÷ 12) × panel length in feet))
